You’ll have a clear pathway from day one. Our Career Development Framework sets out what “good” looks like in each role across our job families, with competency guides and tools for honest, practical conversations about your next step. Promotion is based on performance and behaviours.

Growth is built into everyday work. Leaders and team members meet regularly to set objectives, review progress and plan development. We keep it simple: frequent, quality check-ins, personal development planning and support to learn in role. A typical rhythm is every 4 to 6 weeks.

We also support internal mobility. If you want to explore a different practice area or move into business services, talk to us. We encourage open resourcing, secondments and work shadowing so you can widen your experience without leaving the firm.

Mentoring, coaching and leadership development

You won’t be doing it alone. All individuals who are being sponsored by us to complete a pathway to qualification (whether that be as a Trainee Solicitor or a Paralegal completing the SQE or CILEx), and newly qualified lawyers are paired with a mentor outside their reporting line for confidential, practical support. Mentors meet new joiners early, then keep in touch through your first year.

As your responsibilities grow, our People Leaders toolkit and bite-size learning help you build coaching, feedback and team leadership skills. We run short, focused leadership sessions linked to real moments that matter. For those aspiring to leadership, we run our leadership development programme to give you the skills to best support your team, whilst understanding the changing responsibilities of stepping into a leadership role.

Our Aspiring to Partnership programme lifts the lid on what partnership involves and gives you a structured development route, with information panels, curated learning and a facilitated programme for those applying in the next 12–24 months.

Great lawyering blends sharp technical skills with strong human skills. You’ll get both.

From Paralegal to Partner

Sophie Winstanley began her journey at Moore Barlow as a paralegal. She then secured a spot in the firm’s trainee programme, ultimately qualifying as a solicitor in the Major Trauma team.

Study sponsorship and apprenticeships

If you’re working towards a qualification, we can help. We offer sponsorship for legal routes such as LPC, PSC, SQE and CILEX, alongside wider professional development where it supports your role and the firm’s needs. Funding may be full or partial, include study leave, and is confirmed in a simple agreement. Repayment applies if you leave soon after completing the course.

We also support apprenticeships and further education during employment, with time to study and clear guidance on how to apply.

Performance and progression conversations

We make goals visible and keep everyone aligned. Firmwide updates from leadership set direction, then teams translate that into clear outcomes and regular reviews. It’s open, values-led and focused on practical next steps.
